The Shoe Palace

Schuhpalast Pinkus

Directed by Ernst Lubitsch
Germany, 1916
Comedy, Short

Synopsis

In the brisk 40+ minutes of the film, we follow the cometic career of the Lubitsch persona (Pinkus), from his foibles as an unmotivated and unruly school student, through his unpromising job hunt, his first short-lived position as a shoe clerk, and his subsequent success within the shoe business.

What are people saying?

  • suede's rating of the film The Shoe Palace

Way inferior to Lubitsch's other 1916 featurette (the charming "Als ich tot war"), the flat, simplistic story of "Schuhpalast Pinkus" lacks funny moments and interesting characters entirely. Admittedly, appreciating this work wasn't made easier by having to view a dead-silent, barely adequate print with Spanish-cum-Russian intertitles. But I doubt that a great original print would have impressed much more. [yt]
