When a group of American journalists heads to Poland to investigate the death of a Yankee backpacker who disappeared without a trace, they find a creepy village — and a mysterious shrine that suggests strange activities have taken place there.

Much like Jon Knautz's first film, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer, The Shrine is a film that takes too long to get to the fun stuff, but unlike that first film, when that stuff comes, it's not very fun anyway. A nice albeit predictable twist comes at the 2/3 mark in which the perceived bad guys are actually the good ones, but the movie is tensionless and the dramatic emotion is not there. Thus the scares aren't either.
This film runs in the same vein as other such as The Village, and The Wicker Man, Isolated town with cold residents and something secretive. There are some genuinely eerie moments in this film, the real action comes during the last 1/3 of the film where the story is suddenly flipped on it's head. There are better films out there for sure but it is worth a one time watch for the twist if nothing else.
Another recent horror which packs twenty minutes of fine climax onto an hour of fluff. I was hoping the main dude would stay and become a member of this strange demon defense force, but instead they apparently forgot to finish the script? The subtext is cool and gives a fresh tweak to the age-old "hostile yokels" trope.
Also, the grieving mom gave a great performance. Too bad the obnoxious lead was in that scene.
