Jones gives probably her best performance here. A shame she never really came close to it the rest of her career, although I LOVE Portrait Of Jennie. This film is carried by excellent actors of the time, like Bickford, Price, and the always underrated Gladys Cooper. The story of religious persecution and close-mindedness to the faith of others still resonates today. A very moving film. True Hollywood classic. 5 stars
Audiences must have been enchanted by the fresh, young Jennifer Jones as Bernadette. With this performance and the Lubitsch comedy "Cluny Brown" in 1946, it was an auspicious start to what became a long, dull career, excepting "Beat The Devil" of course. Selznick standardized her right away. She didn't have a chance.
