A masterpiece of documentary cinema which relates with bitterness and honesty the tragic French experience of the World War II.

  7. consuelo's rating of the film The Sorrow and the Pity

Without a Big Narrator and plenty of conversations. History beyond the facts, tell it as a gossip with testimonials from every single points of view with Nazi's propaganda sparkled. Perefectly crafted, a master piece.

  8. Jugend21's rating of the film The Sorrow and the Pity

Righteously bitter film. The style is somewhat unstructured, but I found it really picked up in the second part. Also, I found the ghost of WW1 looming throughout the whole film (especially in regards to the German interviews), although perhaps that is another documentary unto itself.

Worth watching the whole damn thing just for the material on Mers-el-K├ębir.

  11. Johnbhoy's rating of the film The Sorrow and the Pity

A fabulous and worthy documentary it covers the occupation, collaboration and resistance of the French people. With intervies with major players from al sides. There are candid interviews with German officers in uniforms, Resistance leaders and French SS soldiers. Made in 1969 - peppered with shocking revelations of greed, anti-semitism, courage and despair. This is a must see!
