Ratings & Reviews

  1. Richmond Hill's rating of the film The Spanish Gardener

Familiar mechanics here: the homosexual subtext favoured so often by Bogarde in his choice of roles, delivered in his mid-period style of pensive, pallid masculinity. It's a missed opportunity: pitched in the wrong format in a period constrained by censorship. Rather than overcoming these strictures, the film timidly cowers within them and rarely offers anything approaching character study despite the talent at hand.
