The Sting is the quintessential con film, one of the great escapist entertainments from Hollywood. It's Hollywood at its finest. It is as perfectly constructed as any comedy and it is a riveting film from start to finish. The cast is terrific, in particular Redford who gives a classic movie star performance. It's a delightful movie and a great joy to watch. Why can't Hollywood churn them out like this anymore?
A whole lot to like in this story of a group trying to pull of The Big Con - cool, likeable characters, sharp, snappy dialogue, and a great sense of style. I might've loved it if the con itself wasn't so convoluted to the point of absurdity, and if the pay-off for all their machinations felt more meaningful, but as it is, it's a good ride that falls short of great. It gets a solid B.
Excellent piece of old Hollywood entertainment led by another Newman-Redford startling collaboration in a script full of humour, pace, twists and turns. G R Hill recreates rather theatrically the Chicago of the prohibition era and packs tons of charisma in a string of tricks and ploys comically delivered in flamboyant style by a certainly outstanding cast where arguably Newman shines above all.
