“Look, if you let anyone else make this film, I’ll kill myself,” director Shane Meadows announced to cult Manchester rock band The Stone Roses. The band gave him the thumbs up and we now have before us an energetic documentary tracking the band’s reunion…
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what’s now showing
Entertaining eventhough it gives virtually no insight in the inner workings of the band. It mostly reads as a fan boy's love letter to his fave band. It's such a shame that Meadows doesn't get anything useful out of the band members and the only surprise to me was that Ian seemed to be the most composed member of the band. Still the music is still ace as it was back in the days.
Great to see the band together and some of their intimacy after the reunion. It looked great and it sounded even better, but I was a bit disappointed in Meadows about the lack of insight and even deeper story of the band and it's members.
Just like me Shane Meadows is too much a fan to make the definitive documentary about the Roses. The clash of personalities within the band is not worked out well just like the aftermath of the incident with Reni in Amsterdam.
Great concertclips nonetheless.
