Early Spielberg might be naive but in the end not that much sentimental. He takes here where he left us after "Duel" : another car chase film but filled with his future favorite topics (broken family, unreachable eldorado etc). The rhythm is there, the talent for stroytelling as well. This still has a nice 1970´s flair, thanks to Zsigmond´s beautiful cinematography. John Williams is already there. Fun piece.

In addition to being a good time, Sugarland Express is a fascinating link: a New Hollywood road movie that departs from its contemporaries (and Duel) towards a light-hearted, charitable, Spielbergian faith in people. His first film made for theaters. His first broken family. Early proof he could do character.
Goldie Hawn is real great in this very human comedy version of the criminal couple on the run, one of New Hollywood's favorite type. It might not be as great as Badlands but it's got the charms and the style to make it a more than solid road follow up to the also great Duel. Plus with Spielberg, you know it's never really boring.

Passable road movie with no great surprises but rather a lot of charm. The quality of the performances by Goldie Hawn and William Atherton is where most of the entertainment can be had here while the ending was surprisingly downbeat for an earlier Spielberg film. It doesn't bear much resemblance to his other films, which was interesting - perhaps more interesting than the film itself.
Un bellissimo Spielberg prima maniera,in cui Steve affronta,alternando leggerezza e drammaticità,il contrasto tra la natura delle pure e semplici emozioni umane con l'ingannevole e grigia realtà del mondo.Trama lineare ma solida,il film ruota intorno all'umanità dei protagonisti,fonte d'origine di una lotta di classe motivata.Ottimo anche l'accento sull'ossessione americana per le armi.Un gran bel film,da rivalutare.
I really like the warmheartedness Spielberg shows here, especially in the relationship between Max and the central couple. The comedic tone at the beginning of the film fits much better than its more serious moments, and some moments of raucous anarchy are just as suffocating here as they are in 1941.
The Sugarland Express reveals the sentimentality we've come to expect from the director at the outset. Cutting too harshly from the absurdist tone of the rest of the film in the final 20 minutes, the shift from comedy to drama not really working. Still an entertaining flick, both Hawn and Atherton give goofy but lovable performances and Spielberg controls the action, suspense and comedy with ease. Flawed but good.
