  1. Karl J. Kipling's rating of the film The Thaw

Is it well made? Yes, very well made. Boris Barnet, you know. Aesthetically pleasing? Aye, Barnet can do a mean Dovzhenko impression. So what's the problem? Well the problem's the same with something like TRIUMPH OF THE WILL - well made, aesthetically pleasing, but... in praise of Nazism. Not my thing. I don't blame Barnet, every now and then he had to eat dirt and do an assignment for the Cause...

  2. Karthik's rating of the film The Thaw

Clearly exhibiting Dovzhenko's influence, this was Barnet's last silent film before he made his more complex wartime masterpieces. It is quite nakedly a propaganda film (the late 20s were when dekulakization was at its height) but suffused with the rhythms of nature and Barnet's own brand of dynamic formal beauty that cannot for instance be done justice to with screenshots.
