2-3. Insanely hard to sit through, given the nature of the leading character. He generally lacks the energy and charisma that makes vampire characters interesting; but the way 'vampire' explains his character is timelessly appealing. The movie always looks good, with the 'run and gun' approach yielding nice results. But another issue is the sedated nature that typifies indie movies. Still, solid, if too slow.
The director, just like Milo, has a very specific taste when it comes to vampire stories and films. A bit contrived approach, but nevertheless a deviation for the better on what is usually expected from this niche. No lust, no luxury, no pale white creatures. A nice debut by Michael O'Shea and the two young actors.
A smart take on vampirism stemming from poverty and marginalization as much as it does loneliness and alienation. The focused character drama at its core is adept at hitting whatever emotional buttons it wants to at all times. However, Milo's murders aren't as seamlessly integrated, as we know what Milo is capable of from the very beginning, where it should have been a later catharsis for a greater dramatic impact.
CANNES 2016 Un Certain Regard. 10th film viewed. Minimalist in the spirit of Blood Simple (Coen Bros), Murder by Contract (Irving Lerner) or Shadows. Never a vampire was closer to what we are.
