I must sheepishly admit that this is my first experience with Chaney and he does not disappoint. Crawford is also outstanding, able to convey so much with just a glance or blinking of her eyes. The plot is certainly outlandish, but at times positively unsettling.
A great Tod Browning production. Chaney gives a spellbinding performance, you literally can't take your eyes off him. He approaches pure mania in one of the final scenes and it has to be seen to be believed. Crawford gives new supporting work here, in one of her best early roles. A short, to the point type of film. A mini-classic. 4.5 stars
