Ratings & Reviews

  1. José Neves's rating of the film The Unknown Man of Shandigor

4k, restored. What a heavy and frustrating rhapsody, no fun at all and quite pretentious. It's important to reavaliate the films that Chabrol directed from similar premises: the joke on spies' films, in particular the James Bond series that was already in vogue. Any comparison with Godard's "Alphaville" is misleading.

  2. Rūdolfs R. Vītoliņš's rating of the film The Unknown Man of Shandigor

First of all, this spy film is a parody. But not like Get Smart or some slapstick shit. It has lots of intense hyperbolized scenes and Cold War caricatures, but with good taste and cinematographic style (like Alphaville perhaps). Parody hides under absurdity, not under some again and again overused 007 cliché. Example for wierdness of this film could expressed with Serge Gainsbourg as leader of french mercenaries.
