Under-rated thriller finds a doctor experimenting with human blood attempting to play on a town's superstitions by making a series of murders look like the work of a vampire and attempting to frame the town simpleton. Not a horror film despite the title but a fine thriller with an 'A' cast including Melvyn Douglas, Fay Wray, Lionel Atwill and a deranged Dwight Frye. Well worth a look.
Have yet to see an Atwill film that wasnt at least mostly worth a look. This one is a cool thriller with Wray and a demeted Frye, about a doctor experimenting with blood, making the ensuing murders look like the work of a vampire. Misleading title makes you think it will be a forgotten Universal Horror, but its just a thriller. 4 stars
really under-appreciated.
ends up being too many old men standing around talking in rooms. but some scenes (opening sequence, lynching, fay wrays scene in the garden-making the [stupid-]hero kiss an apple, most of the interior tracking shots) shines with the darkest, slowest brilliance.
