  5. Ma-rewind's rating of the film The Vertical Ray of the Sun

  7. Ludovic72's rating of the film The Vertical Ray of the Sun

  10. azoulay's rating of the film The Vertical Ray of the Sun

  11. Aaken's rating of the film The Vertical Ray of the Sun

The last of Trần Anh Hùng's 'Vietnamese trilogy' and perhaps the least satisfactory. As usual, cinematography (this time by Mark Lee) is superb, as is the under-used score by Ton That Tiet. However, the philosophical references, the frequent visual symbolism feels gratuitous, as if the director is himself lost, looking for the real meaning of the characters' meanderings. Beautiful to watch, nonetheless.

  12. εξώτερο Διάστημα's rating of the film The Vertical Ray of the Sun

One doesn’t have to know a lot about the real environs to intuit that this film is a Potemkin village, capital city in fact – there's a funambulist tension that electrifies it inside and out and that’s the fear of subungual dirt or germs, gotten from scratching, even gently, world’s wide sweaty back. I’m not for the décollage tearing and shredding of the soul, but it seems to me that Hung confuses psychical wellbeing

they are all so beautiful ! gosh ! la pluie d'été.

  14. dapose's rating of the film The Vertical Ray of the Sun

My first exposure to art house cinema, I knew it as The Vertical Ray of the Sun. I remember watching this when I was about 10 yrs old, sitting near the front of the packed theatre with my aunt, craning my neck. I have vivid memories of seeing the saturated greens on screen, hearing the sound of glasses clinking, feeling as if I was sitting in the Hanoian humidity, this film showed me the power of cinematography.
