Yamada's films are always a little sappy, but the sap overflows here. Everyone's so nice you want to scream. The picture of the countryside as where life's pure & clean, coupled with the repeat appearance of folksy Japanese "Be it e-ver so 'um-ble"-type tunes make me wonder if this wasn't government sponsored, the day's country populace fleeing too thickly to the cities. Stay home, farmers! Else who's gonna feed us?
