With a premise like this, any other filmmaker would've taken shortcuts & either chose to focus on the drama or comedic elements. But like his follow-up, Eat Drink Man Woman, Lee takes the usual formula & balances both the laughs & the heart of the material while also honoring the generational gap of old & new Chinese culture. Sihung Lung & Ah Lei Gua do great work here in this near-perfect rom com.
This early film by Ang Lee touches on many of the themes that he would explore in his larger budget work. Homosexuality, Asian tradition, and the importance of family is all present in this comedy that is both thoughtful and entertaining. Some of the story's conflicts seem too easily resolved however.
The first half is weaker, it seems to drag on, but the second half is really fun. It addresses several plot points. The story and characters are so interesting, and I may even venture to say that the secondary characters (the mom, dad, and wife) have better roles.
