    Lacking a strict hero/villain dichotomy or an obvious narrative goal makes 'The Westerner' seem like an aimless and meandering addition to the Western genre rather than something unique and subversive. However, its dashes of comedy and sentimentality are quite welcome and Walter Brennan's Oscar-winning turn is strangely endearing. Wyler would go on to make better pictures but this is slight Sunday afternoon viewing.

    William Wyler brings his diligent eye for character detailing and interior spaces to the wide open country of the Western. Cooper's easy charm in the lead role of Cole Harden is matched by the mischievously obsessive Walter Brennan, as the notorious hanging judge Roy Bean. Precedes SHANE in its pitting of 'homesteader' domesticity against 'cattleman' freedom. Features a spectacular firing of the homesteader farms.

    Not withstanding the charms of Gary Cooper, this is an improbable tale of land fights in the new west, where hard-drinking and non-thinking cowboys reek havoc on one another's existence, while the good guy gets the girl. Nice moment when the local moonshine drips on the bar and dissolves it - the tough guys then drink a bottle each without perforating their digestive tracts. Now that's tough ...
