An excellent meditation on men's will to transcend his human condition and their inevitable death, and about their relationship with the mystical. A very difficult film to sit through, but worth viewing! Need to learn about the context of production (this interview of Huillet-Straub with Cahier du cinéma can help a bit: http://www.elumiere.net/exclusivo_web/internaciona_straub/textos/interview_quei_loro_incontri.php)
As is the case in other Straub-Huillet films, Quei Loro Incontri is a static, quasi-didactic affair in which texts drawn from serious, challenging literature (Cesar Pavese is this film's source) are delivered as dialogues by non-professional actors, whose readings are simultaneously stiff and stentorian and somehow, eventually, hypnotic and engrossing. Here both gods and men engage in mutual envy and nostalgia.
