Ratings & Reviews

  1. Hyperion_333's rating of the film These Encounters of Theirs

There's some sublime "R" rolling on show here.

  2. Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film These Encounters of Theirs

Straub-Huillet glide through this landscape and literature to create a rigorous, yet hypnotic canvas of a film!

  3. Francesca Di Donna's rating of the film These Encounters of Theirs

Cesare Pavese is a master and Straub-Huillet are his students

  4. Marc St-Cyr (Death cinéphilia)'s rating of the film These Encounters of Theirs

An excellent meditation on men's will to transcend his human condition and their inevitable death, and about their relationship with the mystical. A very difficult film to sit through, but worth viewing! Need to learn about the context of production (this interview of Huillet-Straub with Cahier du cinéma can help a bit: http://www.elumiere.net/exclusivo_web/internaciona_straub/textos/interview_quei_loro_incontri.php)

  5. Warren Spratley's rating of the film These Encounters of Theirs

  6. Matthew Martens's rating of the film These Encounters of Theirs

As is the case in other Straub-Huillet films, Quei Loro Incontri is a static, quasi-didactic affair in which texts drawn from serious, challenging literature (Cesar Pavese is this film's source) are delivered as dialogues by non-professional actors, whose readings are simultaneously stiff and stentorian and somehow, eventually, hypnotic and engrossing. Here both gods and men engage in mutual envy and nostalgia.
