In which Marvel pairs their most absurd franchise with their most absurdist director. The schtick—genre solemnity, puffed then deflated—is as simple and limited as it is appealing, but the film unlocks the appeal of goth Cate Blanchett, glam Jeff Goldblum, 8-bit-style music, and the visual insanity of Waititi realizing that, as long as CGI has turned actors into cartoons, you might as well run it all towards Tashlin.
Great fun, a top-tier Marvel film. Blanchett is criminally under-utilized (Marvel still has villain problems) and the Asgard plotpoints are easily the weakest. Otherwise, a hot stylized action-comedy that brings out the best in Hemmsworth and co. Goldblum is a delight
A refreshing and delightful change of tone after the yawnfest of The Dark World - definitely the funniest Marvel film yet. Waititi is to be congratulated for being prepared to take stylistic risks and push the boundaries of the Marvel universe. The result is tremendously enjoyable.
