Complex moral tale of honor and civil rights. Also, an awesome and engrossing action adventure featuring badass samurai and evil shogun rulers who want to oppress the poor peasants of the local village. Filled with cool sword duels as well as philosophical debates on the lengths of loyalty and honor in the face of right and wrong, a successful samurai sword play movie, with striking visuals and strikes of steel.
A great debut by a masterful director whose skills with a story and a Scope moving camera are renowned for a reason. What's uncanny is that his films became even better than this, wherein most quality directors would be glad just to have made this one. Hideo Gosha is on a very short list of exemplary action directors in any country, any genre, any cinema epoch. Include Three Outlaw Samurai among Chambara's best.
All the beautiful high contrast, shallow field, kinetic cinematography you expect from the classic, darker chambara of the postwar period; with more disenfranchised Tokugawa-era ronin, bloody revenge and caste upheaval than you can shake a stick at. As such, this would serve as the perfect intro for the uninitiated. However, while it's an explosive blast of genre filmmaking, it's nothing more memorable than that.
impressive debut for Hideo Gosha. I saw a lot of similarities between character arcs between this film and L.A. Confidential. Shiba being Exely, the first one to speak out, sakura is Jack VIncense, the guy trying to alleviate guilt, and Kiyuki is Bud White, The Magestrate's muscle and the last guy to see reason. One of my current favorite samurai films. Great story.
