neither as deep or as bloodthirsty as its superior contemporaries, but relatively entertaining all the same

    Sleek, efficient, and brutal.

    essential samurai films

  5. DarthVader's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

-Neden kendini feda ettin? -Bu çiftçiler çok cesur davrandılar. Bir samuraydan daha azı beklenemez.

  6. Alexander Dunkelberger's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

Complex moral tale of honor and civil rights. Also, an awesome and engrossing action adventure featuring badass samurai and evil shogun rulers who want to oppress the poor peasants of the local village. Filled with cool sword duels as well as philosophical debates on the lengths of loyalty and honor in the face of right and wrong, a successful samurai sword play movie, with striking visuals and strikes of steel.

  7. CarlosEsquives's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

  8. sapta's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

Fantastic film. Highly recommended if you're looking for samurai movie.

  9. ElTigreNegro's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

Gosha's directorial debut was already exploring the hipocrisy and inhuman conditions of the samurai era. Gorgeous black and white photography, great performances. Must see.

  10. Howard Orr's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

A very well-made, excellently-shot chanbara from the famously exacting genre master Gosha. It's beautifully-choreographed swordfights seem far more convincing than those in someone like Kurosawa. N.B., The Criterion BD transfer is lush! :)

  11. M Klein's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

This went by so fast I'll have to watch it all over again.

  12. Brotherdeacon's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

A great debut by a masterful director whose skills with a story and a Scope moving camera are renowned for a reason. What's uncanny is that his films became even better than this, wherein most quality directors would be glad just to have made this one. Hideo Gosha is on a very short list of exemplary action directors in any country, any genre, any cinema epoch. Include Three Outlaw Samurai among Chambara's best.

  13. Jinsie's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

All the beautiful high contrast, shallow field, kinetic cinematography you expect from the classic, darker chambara of the postwar period; with more disenfranchised Tokugawa-era ronin, bloody revenge and caste upheaval than you can shake a stick at. As such, this would serve as the perfect intro for the uninitiated. However, while it's an explosive blast of genre filmmaking, it's nothing more memorable than that.

  14. joey Noodles's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

Pure brilliance. Not an amazing film like other japanese masters would create, but it is a fantastic debut, one of the best, and the action sequences are shot fantastically. An interesting concept is also built upon, I very much hope they do not remake this.

  15. Cosi's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

  16. Barboza's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

impressive debut for Hideo Gosha. I saw a lot of similarities between character arcs between this film and L.A. Confidential. Shiba being Exely, the first one to speak out, sakura is Jack VIncense, the guy trying to alleviate guilt, and Kiyuki is Bud White, The Magestrate's muscle and the last guy to see reason. One of my current favorite samurai films. Great story.

  17. Stu Witmer's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

Better than average samurai flick perhaps best described as 流体 Note to Toshiaki Tsushima: Loose the electric harpsichord!

  18. AKFilmFan's rating of the film Three Outlaw Samurai

A cynical look at loyalty and revenge. Great choreography and performances all around with an ending that leaves you not with heroic happy endings but a sense of quiet disgust at what these Outlaws went through.
