Ratings & Reviews

  1. Juan Javier's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

  2. David Sindmark Hörnfeldt's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

Older films often feel kind of like fever dreams, not movies. They usually have this loose, freewheeling structure that doesn't feel very coherent. It is not always a good thing. Here, it is.

  3. msmichel's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

Later period film from director Carne finds him impressively adapting a novel by Simenon that finds two lonely and worn Parisians living in New York drawn to one another but distrustful and wary of falling in love. Annie Girardot is very good here as the Countess who might be grasping at her last chance for happiness. Solid scripting and a great feel for sixties New York is well captured.

  4. GIL's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

Excellente BO.

  5. captainfez's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

I would've thought a film about carefree boning would be a bit more interesting, frankly.

  6. Hugh Denton's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

A pretty bad film - staged, clunky, stilted and with little dramatic flow. It shares with Jean-Paul Melville's Deux Hommes Dans Manhattan from 6 years earlier a clumsy focus on New York "Big City culture", as well as a turgid script and meaningless vignette scenes substituting for plot or character development. That Carné had a much bigger budget and made a far more polished film, does him no favours here. Wooden.

  8. dAlton Anthony's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

The dialogue really caught me on this one....felt like a cross between Balzac and Tennessee Williams. Wavered with the five stars due to the blatant sexism and misogyny here....for instance, oh, he hauls off and slaps her two times hard across the face and she runs into his arms? I related to him being a loser on hard times, but Carne is more concerned with authoring an apology than staying on point with the angst.

  9. Victor Morosoff's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

  10. Jason's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

Having written that piece advocating for a cinema that goes down in the streets and then (along with writer Jacques Prévert) basically inventing poetic realism, Carné would be by an estimation a central figure in early sound cinema. Here adapting Simenon (many years later) he is still basically doing poetic realism. THREE ROOMS doesn't do much but simmer. But it emphatically does indeed simmer. Two ace performances.

  12. nicole.peter@orange.fr's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

Pour Girardot surtout. Le film s'enlise un peu.

  14. vincent's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

  15. Jean A. Vachon's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

  16. azoulay's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

  17. catweinz@gmail.com's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

  18. Didonne's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan

Autre temps, autres moeurs !

  19. FISCHER's rating of the film Three Rooms in Manhattan
