Our take

Lotte Reiniger’s magical interpretation of the famous Thumbelina fairy tale—directed with her husband Carl Koch—hypnotizes like a miniature: the eye is drawn to its ravishing details, elegant gestures, and impressive condensation of the material. But a subversive—could it be Freudian?—note rings on.
