    About as good as the wartime-set Japanese romantic melodrama gets.Terrifically unpredictable it ain't: anyone bets that this kind of thing is ever going to end with the fellow back intact from the war and dream house is going to lose that bet, every single time. An affecting work regardless, due in no small degree to its two fine lead actors and director Imai's ability to sustain the romantic melancholy.
