Ratings & Reviews

  1. De La Ghetto's rating of the film To Live

How can such a sad and depressing film make me feel so happy and hopeful to be alive? The phenomenal balancing act Yimou performs between these two extremes is part of why I count this film among my favorites of all time. A moving, educational, gut wrenching, whimsical, sweeping epic that is unafraid of being as dramatic as the historical events it chronicles actually were. This movie is crazy underrated.

  2. FISCHER's rating of the film To Live

Un étonnant et flamboyant mélodrame chinois, véritable épopée dramatique du malheur familial, tourné avec maestria par un Zhang Yimou littéralement subjugué par son sujet et son actrice principale toujours aussi séduisante... www.cinefiches.com

  4. Aaken's rating of the film To Live

Zhang YiMou was at his peak in the 90's before his turned to glossy but bland big budget epics. Gong Li as usual excellent and magnetic.

  11. stephaniet's rating of the film To Live

The film making was so melodramatic that I had time connecting with anything emotionally. Nonetheless, an interesting document of mid-90s Chinese film.

  12. liside's rating of the film To Live

the novel is amazingly moving, and honestly this film can in no way even begin to compare. it moves too quick in all the wrong parts and cuts off some of the better moments and dialogues. anyway worth it because...crying gong li. and the soundtrack.

  13. David Cohen-Tanugi's rating of the film To Live

An engrossing, compassionate film about a family that's just trying to elad a tranquil life in the midst of tumultuous times. Zhang Yimou plays it safe by staying away from the more disturbing aspects of 20th-century Chinese history, but the plot feels real and the characters are immensely believable.

  14. MarcH's rating of the film To Live

A true epic. Handled with the skill of David Lean, and starring one of the greatest actresses you'll ever see.

  15. L. Nolan's rating of the film To Live

The film that revealed Yimou as a modern master-director. Superlative, and incredibly emotive, in every aspect.

  16. Alex's rating of the film To Live

  17. Zachary George Najarian-Najafi's rating of the film To Live

What an experience, an intimate and emotional film, and another great film from Zhang Yimou. Everything is close to perfect, the casting, the cinematography, well nearly everything. The film suffers from an uneven first half and an amazing second half. The film could have and should have been longer to increase the scope of the film.

  18. Mary Anne Magajes's rating of the film To Live

  19. rado's rating of the film To Live

Nothing can prepare you for this surprising, moving and ultimately devastating masterpiece of cinema.
