Seen on the big screen at Cinefamily in LA. Ozu's silent comedies deserve more credit: they're faster, more energetic, and allowed to be unburdened by dialogue. This one is unmistakably his, but has the lightness of Keaton. It's a sort of call-and-response to King Vidor's The Crowd, set in a hierarchical Japan when the Depression hit. The silver lining of the crisis: hierarchies may matter less and less.

  3. Ma-rewind's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

  4. BUSTER TIERNEY's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

  5. Bonnet Michel's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

  6. darjee's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

50 years before Kaurismaki, without his finnish deadpan or his auteur's patina but with a deep representation/reflection on comedy and its contradictions.

  7. RoRoRoro's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

  8. Caillouquiroule's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

  9. CarlosEsquives's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

  10. Sunrise's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

The keyhole glance of Okajima confronting his boss about allegiance to capitalism over humanity visually links him to a humiliated co-worker that contemplates the retrieval of money from within a urinal well: a thematic relationship between economy and embarrassment. The embarrassments shared suggest the social illusion of locked doors that divide, and further allow grounds for sympathy in times of social depression.

  11. TFCHooligan69's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

This fine blend of comedy and family melodrama was a treat to behold on the big screen at TSFF. Fine performances all around, and a 7-year old Hideko Takamine too. Sadly, Tokihiko Okada was taken from the world far too soon.

  12. Jon's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

Loses steam after the first quarter or so, but for the fan fight and some other memorable scenes, you gotta watch this one.

  13. Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

My love for Ozu continues to grow each time I see another one of his films!

  14. Roscoe's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

Marvelous, on the big Castro screen at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. Fresh and engaging at all times, it sneaks up on you.

  15. AKFilmFan's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

Similar to Chaplin's films with its blend of humor and melancholy, Ozu's hybrid comedy was not only a turning point in his career but is a delightful film to watch.

  16. Josh Tierney's rating of the film Tokyo Chorus

One of the funniest films I've ever seen.
