what is threatening about the outsider? is it more or less dangerous than monotony? as japan experiences the assimilation of the alternative into the mainstream, it becomes more and more necessary to understand, without judgment, the people on the fringe.
An eye-opening, absurd and twisted documentary subjecting a bizarre Japanese social phenomenon. Asian culture may be one of the most self-depreciating and what is happening with "Idols" and their middle-aged "fans" is disturbing and unforgettable. The documentary moves briskly but doesn't quite sustain it's lean 90 minute runtime. This kind of subject may have worked better on Vice or a short doc, not a full one.
