Post-communist Romenia as breeding ground for all kinds of madness, including that which turns men into murderous monsters, both those that haunt mines and those who reside in offices. This is a precious triumph of genre crosspollination, just as absurd as it is terrifying, tragic and improbably funny. One can practically taste Pintilie’s anger and desperation through it all. What and ending!
Pintilie’s works in 90s always surprise me with his bold direction & mature insight into harsh reality of Romania. This movie which may be called “Mine Noir” has two adverse elements: abundant energy of people (that relation with heroin is like 70’s Italian erotic comedy) and ominous darkness in Iliescu era. But, oau, that enigmatically silly/sinister (or sillister?) ending made me speachless for a while. WTF?
