Unlike Jaime, this plot and this mythology of a place could have been in trás-os-montes or anywhere else, since the director manipulates everything. I even imagine that the idea of Portuguese people working in the construction in France but telling stories by the fire back home looks very kitsch and extremely nice to intelectuals, but the place here should have been protagonist and not green screen.
Cinema without any regard to its own subjects and characters, precisely by not giving them the chance to be either subjects or characters. A non-linear narrative reflects indeed the lack of narrative and coherence throughout the movie: all we have are thoughtless ideas about space and time, narrative progression or "poetic images" (which are often corny and sentimental). A movie about nothing: what cinema mustn't be.
