Re-watched this yesterday for the first time in a long time yet still loved it today... always thought Disney did a fine job doing their sci-fi take on Stevenson's classic novel, but also amazing how the traditional & the CGI are combined for which started a new era of their style at the time. Pretty awesome characters along with the fantastic animation it has.
The usual high quality animation that one expect from Disney as they make a science fiction version of "Treasure Island". I like the film and especially that the film lacks singing numbers. The first race sequence from the police was even ripped by J.J. Abrams for the "Star Trek" reboot. It goes out of steam during it's mid part though and the over-familiar story may make some people bored.
Before the solar sails are set this film is sheer adventure perfection, w/ a wonderful melding of Stevenson & steampunk. But then it missteps & feels more like an uninspired retread of the book. The dated rock songs & lowbrow gags are offset by sidekicks, Thomspon's Amelia, & Pierce's Doppler. Despite it's flaws, the sense of adventure & blend of CGI & hand-drawn animation make this an underrated Disney film.
Visually this is probably the least impressive Disney's movie, using a lot of early 2000 cgi. I didn't really enjoyed it that much, there are to many parts when tries too hard to be "cool and hip", the rest is decent but at all forgettable. Definitely a product of its time.
