I love Gilberto, Caetano, and Os Mutantes, all of whom loom large here, but for as deep as it goes in tapping performers, many of whom were new to me, Tropicalia is surprisingly superficial and un-illuminating. For fans, the archival footage and contemporary interviews alone are worth 4 stars but newbies may be lost. P.S. Jason Segel should play Caetano if a feature film is ever made. They have the same smile!
Though I consider myself a fan of Brazilian music, I was under the impression that Tropicalia was a movement that was readily embraced by all young people at the time (I'm embarrassed to admit this). This is a good starting point for someone interested in learning more about this period. Great footage, too!
