It is hard not to fall head over cowboy boots in love with David Byrne's impressive first film True Stories... Though the visual creativity which the Talking Heads have always been known for bursts from nearly every shot (the most splendid culmination being found perhaps in the mesmerizing fashion show) it's the characters which give the film its absurd, yet strangely familiar, flavor.

Byrne's obsession with capturing striking environmental details is perfectly matched with Ed Lachman's cinematography. Visually, TRUE STORIES evokes the shiny pre-fab face of Texas, where money from oil and microelectronics makes everything look new, as well as the dusty, weird Texas, a result of its funky ethnic mix.
