This film tells us not only "about the mechanisms of dictatorship and tyranny" (to quote the synopsis) but also about society in general. Neither mis-information (by the mass media, politicians, teachers, one's own family et cetera) nor negative consequences of heresy are confined to "un-democratic" countries.
I lived through similar ordeals, as a child too, though mine were derived from the fact that I'd use my left hand when writing, which was an affront to the teachers/principals and while I was never shot for it, there were those who had a proclivity for corporal punishment: they'd beat on my left hand with a willow switch, or a ruler. One liked to tie it behind my back afterwards. They lost.
