Ratings & Reviews

  1. Corey's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

Beautifully shot, stylish, imaginative. Kind of dragged toward the end though.

  2. Samuel Wells's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

An interesting mix of self awareness and craft the film looks at film persona and what it means for the individual. The issue with the film is that is does not strike the requisite balance early enough in the film to give the viewer the trust to go along with the more out there touches and the film comes off as a gimmicky. The film can be credited for its reliance on an intelligent audience, but goes too far with it.

  3. Slappy McGee's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

I enjoyed the first hour of this and then it stretched further than I was willing to follow. The uniqueness of past blended with present was great to see. My biggest sadness with this film was the god-awful performance of Harvey Keitel. Bland, dull, terrible line delivers, bad acting all over the place. I usually enjoy his work, but here he ruins the movie for me. I wish this film was shorter and sans Harvey.

  4. Erik F.'s rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

Keitel acts like he barely had any time to prepare his lines. But there are still some powerful moments and images here, as you'd expect from an Angelopoulos film.

  5. ShawnD's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

I am not averse to pretentious twaddle. I like Babel. I don't mind the European variety with US actors. I like Zabriskie Point. But the line is crossed when I'm asked to buy Keitel as a Greek-born director researching early filmmakers--the plot screams IMPORTANT and is really an excuse to review Greek 20th Century history. Keitel sounds like he's reading off cue cards. Awful. The only plus here is cinematography.

  6. Rice Dream Girl's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

Visually marvelous, politically ambitious. The Balkans in their nakedness. Keitel is an embarrassment.

  7. Stefan Drees's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

Angelopoulos creates memorable and sometimes even meditative images for the odyssee of a filmmaker through several Balkan countries suffering from war (of course with many references to Homer's "Odyssee") in search for historical and cultural memories.

  8. FISCHER's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

Une mémorable oeuvre somme, d'une terrible mélancolie diffuse d'où émerge la superbe présence d'un magnifique Harvey Keitel et que l'on ne se lasse pas de revoir... www.cinefiches.com

  9. El Biffo's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

Harvey Keitel's performance is awkward, as is much of the dialogue, but the images are great.

  10. Ramona Arsene's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

  11. ceknklsn's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

  12. Gyseltrut's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

"The first thing God created was the journey, then came doubt, and nostalgia." A tale of wandering revolving around the symbiotic relationships which people of various nationalities develop in order to escape the tough social and political realities.

  13. AdrianM.'s rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

3.5 This is a pretty difficult film to rate.Yes, it is pretentious and maybe even a bit too long but it's worth going through the whole experience even in one sitting, if not for the long meditative takes at least for the poetic images and beautiful music

  14. Kristina Tamelytė's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

disappointment. after 'eternity and a day' this one is just bad.

  15. Diana Vaz's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

I didn't like the film, it was too long I couldn't like the main character. As always it is beautifully shot and the soundtrack is amazing.

  16. knockkneed's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

despite recycled images, portentous acting, and a machined climate i found this more poignant than theo's usual

  17. Arcanus's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

Fine Music. Never seen the film, though.

  18. Joks's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

Anyway, he agreed to it but Angelopoulos insisted that he see one of his films first, so he flew to the U.S to organise a private screening. Harvey claims that he fell asleep during the film and his partner at the time nudged him about she realised. Theo apparently smiled at him, and Harvey supposedly turned around and said 'ok, i'll do the movie', despite not having seen one of his films in full. haha

  20. Mario Gaborović's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

Lenin scene was stolen from Dušan Makavejev's "Gorilla Bathes at Noon". And the very first movie made in the Balkans was not Manakis brothers' film from 1905, but "Crowning of King Peter Karadjordjevic" from 1904 filmed by two Englishmen in Serbia.

  21. Howard Orr's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

Angelopoulos and Keitel's "A" are both fascinated not so much with cinema itself as with the gaze of history and of memory, the endless procession of dispossessed people -each procession representing pain needing to be remembered. Angelopoulos' film set is a device ready-built with the need to fill it with people, movement and duration, even if it also sometimes succumbs to the dangerous siren-song of perfection.

  22. joey Noodles's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

how much nudity is there in this film, I ask because I have purchased this and am planning to watch with my Dad, just to confirm that the viewing isn't too awkward (cough Taxi Driver porn theatre scene cough)

  23. Pooyan R's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze

half of the stars are for the music.

  24. Tigrão's rating of the film Ulysses' Gaze
