Synopsis

Follows animal rights lawyer Steven Wise in his unprecedented challenge to break down the legal wall that separates animals from humans, by filing the first lawsuits that seek to transform a chimpanzee from a ‘thing’ with no rights to a ‘person’ with legal protections.

    Of interest to law nerds and animal rights advocates; brilliant for us who are both. Veteran doc duo Hegedus & Pennebaker follow the fascinating legal (cultural, media) strategies & battles in the early days of lawyer Steven Wise's Nonhuman Rights Project - both audacious & long overdue. As hard to watch as it should be (I cried), but free of cheap heartstring manipulation; it's our persistent illogic that's tragic.
