My intro to Franco...hope there are others this good. A weird mix of exploitation and art that will please few but I liked it. Enjoyed the nice nod to Resnais's LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD early on. If you're too drunk and/or tired for something challenging but don't want LCD popcorn shit, this is a good 3rd option.
Often considered exploitation auteur Jesus Franco's masterpiece - it's certainly his most accomplished film, but that's not saying much. Part erotic melodrama, part gothic horror - Franco crafts a few effective scenes and memorable visuals. But the meandering plot is too slow-paced to be really compelling - even Klaus Kinski seems tame in a small role. Great jazz score by Manfred Mann.
