Our take

Drawing comparisons to John Cassavetes, yet still utterly unique, the irascible French auteur Maurice Pialat makes volatile dramas about prickly and tumultuous human emotions. Take this portrait of an on-again, off-again affair, which is both a shrewd challenge but nevertheless rewarding.
