everyone in the movie is demented and sweaty!! i love it but deducted 2 stars bcuz it was too racist for my brown ass even tho the white devils got scalpt!!! and...i think it's great how in the 20s repulsive abject deformed ppl like myself had lon chaney to represent us in popular media...but i live in now and only have like...Gollum to relate to onscreen :(
One of the great films Tod Browning (Freaks) made with Lon Chaney. Browning and Chaney were two of the greatest names in early cinema. One of these films, London After Midnight, seems to have been lost forever :( But you can still see The Unknown (with Joan Crawford!), The Unholy Three, Road to Mandalay, and this one. I give them all my highest recommendation.
Fascinati.ng Lon Chaney/ Tod Browing confection. Chaney plays a former magician now crippled vowing revenge on the man who stole his wife. His jungle lair in Zanzibar exists so he can rob the man who wronged him and unbeknownst to the man raise his lovechild in the worse way imaginable. Strange to say the least but remarkable as well. High melodrama, voodoo, complicated plotting that doesn't bear anaylis. A find.
As for perversity, addiction, sex slavery, racism--in the bone through the nose variety of the silent era--revenge, and carny magic . . . well, you can't do better than Tod Browning's silent _West of Zanzibar_. Hopefully, it will also send a viewer to research the history of King Leopold II of Belgium's independently owned Congo Free State, the location of this nasty bit of drama, and actual genocide of 5-30 Million
