Wonderful comedy of mores from Ozu, its many delights transcend the reflection about modernity and gender roles. The emancipated Setsuko who drinks, drives fast, fences, smokes signals the 'kairos' of tradition's demise but anticipates also the perils of a repressive matriarchy. The pillow shots are here, as always with Ozu lovely points of repose, and the reconciliation in the finale comes with tears and laughs!
A lovely Ozu film - very simple, focused on a Professor and his strict wife whose niece comes to visit them in Tokyo, from Osaka. They abscond from the wife to get drunk and see a geisha show. At the same time his pupil is failing to prepare a child for his school entry exam in maths. Feels influenced by some Hollywood visuals particularly Lubitsch; but also their complicity is figured through 'gangster' hats.
