Ratings & Reviews

  1. Terry_Moby's rating of the film Wichita

A solid morality play. Recommended to the American NRA.

  2. Silenzio's rating of the film Wichita

Highly underrated western, with a plot well ahead of it's time (on gun control).

  3. filmcapsule's rating of the film Wichita

Another great Western from Tourneur, but this feels different from his other, community-based films. Or maybe not: after all, "Wichita" more directly refers to a place and a group of people than does "Stars in My Crown" and "Canyon Passage". And while it focuses on 1 man, it has a roundabout, episodic quality to its narrative structure.

  4. TheCentralRuhr's rating of the film Wichita

All about reversals of expectations, disrupting preconceived notions, both structurally and formally, and holding its audience to recognize their own illusory myths. It’s also Tourneur’s first cinemascope film and I feel like he’s playing with this transition from academy ratio to cinemascope as a parallel to the reconfiguration of our expectations - a masterclass in staging and blocking of bodies.

  5. Sudipto Basu's rating of the film Wichita

  6. Samuel Andrade's rating of the film Wichita

★★★★ gun control in the Wild West.

  7. polkasan's rating of the film Wichita

A great, well paced and progressive western, surprisingly ahead of his time regarding the gun control laws...

  8. Charles Coleman's rating of the film Wichita

Very fine western. Balanced story, great acting especially by McCrea as Earp, and just very well made. Love the character actors in this film. Very lean film too.

  9. Dave's rating of the film Wichita

Yes, Tourneur could direct fine westerns as well. This one has fortunately become available via the Warner Brothers Archive and is a solid B-western, if wildly historically inaccurate.
