Ratings & Reviews

  1. Lumière's rating of the film Wife! Be Like a Rose!

An experimental period for Naruse, this film has moments of poignancy that match his later films' skillful depiction of solitary women who try to make a place for themselves in a society that does not adequately value or recognize them. But it also includes a stage-like depiction of modern Tokyo, more like an American comedy where the stakes are never too high, the worries more surface level, than a Naruse film.

  2. Karl J. Kipling's rating of the film Wife! Be Like a Rose!

A wonderful comedy that takes a few welcome and surprising turns, mocking the Japanese love of tradition as well as the country's rigid class system.

  3. Blue K, Custodian of the Cinema's rating of the film Wife! Be Like a Rose!

Damn insomnia, I can't sleep! I think I'll write a screenplay for this film's sequel and title it, "Wife! Bring Me a Beer!"

  4. InsertOzuReferencehere's rating of the film Wife! Be Like a Rose!

Heart Breaking, yet liberating. A perfect melodrama and one of Naruse's earlier masterpieces.
