Minor Ozu but still great in terms of the dramatic tension and the moral tragedy that flows from irreconcilable choices. Ozu declares in this one too his appreciation for American movies, yet the poetry of the piece is uniquely his own. The montage (tear-steam-prostitutes) and decoupage are already announcing a genius and this one untypically for Ozu is marked by an unusual tone of sadism and genuine heartbreak.

Une oeuvre rare du grand metteur en scène, projetée au festival du film muet de Pordenone (2005) d'une puissante acuité psychologique... www.cinefiches.com

  5. AKFilmFan's rating of the film Woman of Tokyo

Made very quickly, this melodrama is a solid short film for Ozu. And while the story is a bit weak and surprisingly tragic, Ozu's direction makes it all work somehow.

  6. Stevie's rating of the film Woman of Tokyo

I love when Ozu takes on the darker subjects within Japanese society. This is very melodramatic, especially in comparison with many of Ozu's other films. It's a very good but sad film.

God we need more Ozu released in this country...I need more Ozu!

  8. Lynch/Fellini's rating of the film Woman of Tokyo

Damn that ending was dark! This a great hidden gem in the Ozu collection!
