While beautifully colourful, poetic, and surreal this cenrtainly is not Mandico at his best - something is missing here... It might be the feeling that there's not much behind a provocation. The usual dark humour is failing, and really, I am not sure what kind of idea the author is trying to get across - if any. Fortunately, it is only 9 minutes, so worth giving it a try, as it definitely is a unique piece of work.
Visually the movie is stunning. Unfortunately I couldn't fully understand the french part (female protagonist speaking). I'm very annoyed by the screenplay and don't really understand, why someone would want to retell this cruel story, especially using this authoritarian male voice, talking virgins and virtue. I get that he wants to be provocative, but some aspects of it seem to romanticize violence against women.
Two stars just for the delightful screenplay and some hilarious ideas, but the mise-en-scène (cinematography, lighting, scenography, costumes) is far from Mandico's best. Too bad I missed some lines spoken in French by the end, because of the absence of subtitles. And, is the post-credit guy Mandico himself?
The production & sound design of fantasy: condensed. Lush, transgressive opulence. As if Yann Gonzalez had a darker, dirtier, cattier, film director brother w/ a background in fashion photography. Or, like a Cocteau-inspired bedtime story, but for smart queenie bitches like Fassbinder & Visconti. I’d say gleefully perverse but it wasn’t glee so much as poised in-your-face attitude, complete w/ eyebrow arch. Much fun.
