another one of my fave miike films in recent years. here, the carnivalesque has completely invaded everyday life, with little semblance left of the organised division between work and leisure. kishitani goro is outrageously fun as the deranged yakuza bent on getting back at just-out-prison kitamura kazuki. love also korean actor gong yoo's assassin, like the quiet eye of the storm.
Another highly entertaining action film by Miike, Yakuza embraces the fact that it is based on a video game with its colourful mise-en-scene, over-the-top humor, and complementary soundtrack (those guitar licks are sweeeet). Somewhat reminiscent of an R-rated Scott Pilgrim (another video game influenced film), this was one of the more fun films I have seen in recent memory.
