  1. Chelsea's rating of the film Yang ± Yin: Gender in Chinese Cinema

really interesting documentary! i love stanley kwan and i thought his interviewing style was very bold and direct. he explores topics like male bonding & homoerotic tension, father-son relationships, & cross-dressing & gender identity. many of the big directors of mainland, hk, and taiwanese film were interviewed in this. there's also a touching scene w kwan's mother at the end! would definitely recommend watching!

  2. fonzie's rating of the film Yang ± Yin: Gender in Chinese Cinema

it's billed as a study of 'gender in chinese cinema' however it's main focus is male relationships, male bonding, homo-eroticism, and fatherhood. not that that's a terrible thing in fact there's a small section on trans* performances in chinese cinema near the end, i just expected something a tad different. i love the section at the end where the filmmaker interviews his mother for a brief period.

  4. hyobin's rating of the film Yang ± Yin: Gender in Chinese Cinema

Not an in-depth study of gender; if it was, it's a bad one. But what it does well is look further into the films that touched on gender by many of the key film directors of Chinese and Taiwanese cinema. Kwan is a curious person and this film does well in revealing some questions and answers on gender from big names like Tsui Hark as well a revealing disappointing truths behind their ideas.
