Critics reviews

Above all, the slick patter and jazzy montage of You manage to frequently lull us into a state of temporary amnesia as viewers, until we are forcibly brought up short: in-between all these cute scenes of love-matching and making-up, some nasty, violent things are actually going on.

  • smndvdcl's rating of the film You

Following (pun intended) in the footsteps of shows like Dexter and echoing tales like The Girl On The Train, Big Little Lies and Gone Girl, there is much of intrigue in this romance-crime-thriller. Of course it is all very caricatured, but the idea of a charming sociopath/psychopath is certainly gripping. How easy is it to convince ourselves that we are the heroes in our own narratives?

  • Filipe F. Coutinho's rating of the film You

It would have fit in CW’s programming like a glove. A fun, often twisty, and consistently gripping ride. No need to try and find much depth, but it is a unique perspective nonetheless.

  • Bob's rating of the film You

Variations on Mr. Ripley combined with comic monologues in a manner of Kaufman's "Adaptation" - along with charisma of Penn Badgley - bring a sociopath that the viewer can easily love to hate and hate to love. Kudos to episodes not ending with cliffhanger and there's enough story to keep the suspense through the entire season. But, when it's all said and done, it's just an entertaining and cheap time-worthy gimmick.

S1: Something uniquely unsettling about how the show parlays the "progressive liberal feminism" of contemporary social-media culture men into its misogynist underpinnings. Such a discomfiting watch, legitimately disturbing and not made much easier by the sharp shallow focus of nearly every shot. Already dreading spending more time with Joe in S2 - probably won't make it through. #yesallmen

  • Andreea's rating of the film You

It was a fun ride. There was a lot of room for improvement and it did not keep me glued to the screen. Also, why can't show just end? Not sure a second season could work just as well as the first one... (season 1)

  • Dan's rating of the film You

You know this means business when the charming psychopath actually masturbates across the street from his victim's window. Yeah, it goes extremely off the rails but manages to remain incredibly watchable and interesting. Paco and Blythe were the real gems in this entire thing.

  • Nabila Cyrilla I's rating of the film You

"That’s sad. People buying books because of what’s popular, and not because they wanna be moved or changed in some way." such a relatable quote from Beck.

  • Levi Miah's rating of the film You

Interesting, but tonally off (especially with the music) and starts to have really conflicting messages. Using the dark comedy styling of Dexter for a subject so current and not particularly treated with seriousness from a female perspective, it ends up romanticising the lead. I'd probably give it 5 stars if they took the bold decision to remove all the music and let the action and dialogue speak for itself.
