Incredibly touching and charming, Kobayashi's debut film was clearly very strongly influenced by his mentor Keisuke Kinoshita. However, it was really really enjoyable and I finished it with a huge smile and a grin on my face, which was nice. It's well acted with a nice little cameo from Ozu regular Chishu Ryu and it does make some good statements about growing up to. Not to compare with later work, though. 3.5/5
