In a time when political assassinations are becoming more and more frequent in Brazil, this film should be shown all around the country. But maybe with Vago's absolutely ridiculous and unjustifiable homosexuality edited out. I mean, come on! Social degenerate much? I'm glad that the left has grown out of this bullshit.
One of the great political films & is one of the great conspiracy thrillers. Made by Costa-Gavras with nuance & understanding & shot by legendary DP Raoul Cotard, Z breaks down the murder of a leftist politician & the attempts by the right-wing government to hide its involvement. Free of centrist BS & unrealistic Hollywood heroism, Z pulls no punches & makes one see the fascism in modern society. Timeless.
A masterpiece treating in vivid detail the inner workings of political corruption, covering several, if not all, layers involved in the process. It has the pleasant quality of providing intellectual depth and informative value, while keeping things down to earth and captivating. Every minute of this film is enthralling, and its content timeless and tragically human.
Pure film manipulation: whatever your politics, by the end you can't help but demand action. So Z is one of the greatest political films - a transcendent story with particular social umph, technical brilliance, and comedy delicately sprinkled throughout. It never stops to let you breath, and that's it's biggest merit.
Very well done, even if it's a little too dry to thrill me. Still, it's well written, well acted, and well put together. The ensemble is memorable, the score is great, and the camerawork has an occasionally astonishing ingenuity. I just wish it let me sink my teeth into it a little more.
