During the American Civil War, Lt. Hewitt serves with the U.S. Cavalry. A group of Indians return to the reservation which they were not supposed to leave, so Col. Chivington orders the Sand Creek Massacre. Hewitt disagrees with the punishment and realizes the Indians will unite and spread terror.
