Captured by the Americans in North Africa, Georg Gärtner was shipped to the USA as a German POW at Camp Deming, New Mexico. He escaped in 1945 and eluded the FBI for the next 40 years. Gärtner took on a new identity as Dennis F. Whiles, and was never recaptured.
